Let go of your inhibitions! Tap into your creativity!

Improvisational quilting means letting go of all expectations and preconceptions of what you are going to make.

Come spend two days with Irene Roderick and learn how to let your sub-conscience and creativity drive you to make a unique expression of your individual aesthetic and process. Relax, play, let it happen, and see what comes out.

At QuiltCon 2020 Irene won first place in the Improvisation Category for her “Line Drawing Landscape”.

This single class is over 2 days: Saturday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Please bring your dinner on Saturday and your lunch on Sunday. Class is held A total of 13 hours of Irene’s creative and intimate instruction. The two day class is $200. Class is held at our Studio.

Irene will direct you through her method of creating a quilt that she considers the act of “Dancing With The Wall.” She will give tools, tips, instructions and a lot of hands-on individual attention to assist you along the way. Expect to have a fun, challenging and rewarding experience.

Carolyn K. said this about the class: “Dancing with the Wall class with Irene Roderick was fabulous! I was nervous about learning improv quilting but Irene’s step by step approach made it easy to learn. The class space at Over the Top Quilting was great. Class was limited to 6 which gave each student quality time to learn how to improve quilt. Highly recommend this class.”

Preparation: Start finding pictures (photos, advertisements, postcards, paintings) that strongly speak to you because of color or design.  Try to determine a common factor among them to help with picking your fabric colors.  Bring fabric you really want to work with, not leftovers or fabrics that have just been sitting around that you aren’t particularly drawn to.  If you find a particular shape or motif that is very strong for you, it can be used as an inspiration and bring it with you.

This process is spontaneous and organic.  Try not to visualize your project prior to class.  Pre-visualization is a deterrent to being able to let go and let whatever happens, happen. That is where magic can happen. Book now June. Book now September.

Supplies:
– Sewing machine and all stuff that goes with sewing: scissors, cutting wheel, cutting mat, marking pens/chalk, pins for pinning pieces together and for putting onto design wall
– Quilting rulers if you have them. We suggest 6” square, 10” square and 6.5×24”. If you have some, they are helpful for squaring up components made improvisationally.
– A 48″x 52″x 1/2″ design board. We can provide the design board for your studio use (not to take home) for an additional $25.00. Please let us know if you need one so we can have it prepared for you.

Fabric:
— 3 yards white or off-white
— 1 yard of a dark (black, dark brown, navy, maroon, forest green)
— 3-4 different colors of  fabric, mostly solids that “talk nicely” to each other
