This class helps you create layered designs using multiple rulers. You’ll learn how to enhance a border using a rope tool or an oval ruler. The class includes design work on paper before moving onto a longarm machine to practice. Preparation and supplies are required. Class is at our Studio. There will be a break for lunch; please bring your lunch. The class is $120; a $25 deposit is required. A minimum of 3 students is required, with a maximum of 4 students.

Leann McClain

Our instructor, Leann McClain of La Grange, TX, is a professional longarmer and also Director of Music for Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Giddings, Texas. Her professional longarm career began in 2013, with the purchase of an APQS Millie. Leann’s clients include The Quilted Skein, the quilt shop in La Grange, noted most recently for the 2016 Block of the Month program: “La Dolce Vita”. Her “Fandango Transformation” quilt was published in “Machine Quilting Unlimited” magazine’s September/October 2015 issue. Book now.

Preparation: The student needs to prepare a sample quilt measuring 24″ x 50″-60″ to give lots of room for design ideas. Choose a simple pattern such as flying geese, 1/2 or 1/4 square triangles, simple 4patch and/or a simple appliqué, or embroidery as a central design theme. Your simple quilt should have solid fabric to allow the quilting to stand out.

Supplies: Supplies marked with an (*) asterisk are available at the Studio:

♦ Newsprint, sketchpad, or drawing paper at least the size of the blocks to sketch planned design.
♦ Pencils, sharpie markers, for drawing
♦ Blue painter’s tape
♦ Straight ruler of choice or optional templates to mark straight lines and crosshairs for accurate placement of rulers.*
♦ Two or 3 templates purchased in advance so protective plastic is already peeled off ready to use.*
♦ Marking tools such as chalk, pounce, air erase markers, blue line marker, pencils.*
♦ Tool for placing around your pencil to practice drawing before putting needle to quilt sandwich.*
