Let go of your inhibitions! Tap into your creativity!
Improvisational quilting means letting go of all expectations and preconceptions of what you are going to make.
Come enjoy three days with Irene Roderick and learn how to let your subconscious and creativity drive you to make a unique expression of your individual aesthetic and process. Relax, play, let it happen, and see what comes out.
At QuiltCon 2020 Irene won first place in the Improvisation Category for her “Line Drawing Landscape”.
This single workshop is 24 hours of Irene’s creative and intimate instruction over 3 days. There is a break for lunch each day. Please bring your lunch or get lunch from one of the local restaurants.
The price is $300, non-refundable after a date. Book now. (Our refund policy is below.)
Class is held at our separate creative space, Studio 110, next store to our main studio.
Irene will direct you through her method of creating a quilt that she considers the act of “Dancing With The Wall.” She will give tools, tips, instructions and a lot of hands-on individual attention to assist you along the way. Expect to have a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience.
Carolyn K. said this about the class: “’Dancing with the Wall’ with Irene Roderick was fabulous! I was nervous about learning improv quilting but Irene’s step by step approach made it easy to learn. The class space at Over the Top Quilting was great. Class size was limited which gave each student quality time to learn this technique.
Highly recommend this class.”
Before class preparation: Start finding pictures (photos, advertisements, postcards, paintings) that strongly speak to you because of color or design. Try to determine a common factor among them to help with picking your fabric colors. Bring fabric you really want to work with, not leftovers or fabrics that have just been sitting around that you aren’t particularly drawn to. If you find a particular shape or motif that is very strong for you, it can be used as an inspiration, so bring it with you.
This process is spontaneous and organic. Try not to visualize your project prior to class. Pre-visualization is a deterrent to being able to let go and let whatever happens, happen. That is where your magic happens.
