“Star Storm” (80″ x 80″) and “Star Storm Mini” (40″ x 40″) are fun quilts that go together fairly quickly.  In five 4-hour sessions, you should have a new quilt top that is a star: either the 40 x 40 or the 80 x 80. You chose! During the first class, we will organize your fabrics and begin cutting the strips.  You will not need your sewing machines for the first class.  In the subsequent classes, we will sew the strips together, trim them into the wedges that make up the star, and then sew those wedges together.  And voila!  You will have a completed quilt top.  When you sign up for the class, please be sure to indicate whether you want to make “Star Storm” (80” x 80”) or “Star Storm Mini” (40” x 40”) so that we can have the appropriate pattern for you.

The classes has 5 sessions. each are 4 hours. Price is $150. Book now. (Our refund policy is below.)

Kathleen Bassi

Our teacher for this class is Kathleen Bassi.  Kathleen began quilting a bit tentatively about 10 years ago.  Once she retired, she went gangbusters and sews nearly every day.  Her favorite piecing method is paper piecing, and she often converts standard block patterns into paper piecing patterns.  But “Star Storm” captured her fancy a number of years ago when she saw the quilt in a store south of here.  She finally found the pattern and hopes to share her joy in the pattern with others.

Fabric Requirements: The star is made up of an inner star followed by 10 strips stacked on the inner star.  These are sewed together in 10 wedges.  You may choose to contrast fabrics (e.g., light and dark of the same color) in some of the strip levels.  Or you could choose to make all of a round the same color, in which case, be sure to get sufficient fabric for both the odd and even sides of the round.  According to the pattern, Rounds B, D, and F are the same regardless of whether you are contrasting colors in the other rounds.  The fabric amounts provided below allow for splitting the colors in these three rounds.  Rounds I and J are also the same color and are very small pieces.

Although the strips are 2½” wide for “Star Storm Mini,” a typical jelly roll will not be sufficient unless your quilt is supposed to be very scrappy, because there are usually not enough strips of the same color for the longer strips that are required for the pattern.  The inner star and Rounds I and J require fabric that is 3½” wide (i.e., wider than a jelly roll).  Note that the strips for “Star Storm” (80” x 80”) are 4½” wide, definitely too wide for a jelly roll.
